The current official syllabus for RRB Technician recruitment is given in the detailed CEN 02/2025 notification. This notification separately defines the CBT pattern and syllabus for Technician Grade I Signal and for Pay Level 2 Technician Grade III posts.

The official RRB website has also shown 2026 activity for this recruitment cycle through city intimation, e-call letter and objection tracker updates. That makes the CEN 02/2025 notification the correct syllabus source for candidates preparing in 2026.

Selection Process for RRB Technician

As per the official notification, the recruitment process consists of three stages:

1. Computer Based Test
2. Document Verification
3. Medical Examination

The marks scored in the CBT are used for shortlisting candidates for the later stages. There is no separate CBT-2 mentioned for this technician recruitment in the official notification reviewed for this article.

Grade 1 Signal Subject Wise Topics

The official syllabus for Technician Grade I Signal covers the following areas:

• General Awareness: Current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history of India including freedom struggle, Indian polity and constitution, Indian economy, environmental issues concerning India and the world, sports, and general scientific and technological developments.
• General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, alphabetical and number series, coding and decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, jumbling, venn diagram, data interpretation and sufficiency, conclusions and decision making, similarities and differences, analytical reasoning, classification, directions, and statement-arguments and assumptions.
• Basics of Computers and Applications: Architecture of computers, input and output devices, storage devices, networking, operating systems such as Windows, Unix and Linux, MS Office, various data representation methods, internet and email, websites and web browsers, and computer virus.
• Mathematics: Number system, rational and irrational numbers, BODMAS rule, quadratic equations, arithmetic progression, similar triangles, Pythagoras theorem, coordinate geometry, trigonometrical ratios, heights and distances, surface area and volume, sets and their representations, empty set, finite and infinite sets, equal sets, subsets, universal set, venn diagrams, union and intersection of sets, difference of sets, complement of a set, properties of complement, and statistics including range, mean deviation, variance, standard deviation and probability basics.
• Basic Science and Engineering: Physics fundamentals such as units, measurements, mass, weight, density, work, power, energy, speed, velocity, heat and temperature; electricity and magnetism including electric charge, field and intensity, electric potential and potential difference, simple electric circuits, conductors, insulators, Ohm's law and limitations, resistance in series and parallel, specific resistance, relation between electric potential, energy and power, Ampere's law, magnetic force on moving charged particle and long straight conductors, electromagnetic induction, Faraday's law, electromagnetic flux, magnetic field and magnetic induction; electronics and measurements including basic electronics, digital electronics, electronic devices and circuits, microcontroller, microprocessor, electronic measurements, measuring systems and principles, range extension methods, cathode ray oscilloscope, LCD, LED panel and transducers.

RRB Technician Grade 3 Exam Pattern

The Grade 3 paper uses a different subject structure from Grade 1 Signal and gives the highest weightage to General Science.

Grade 3 Subject Wise Topics

The official syllabus for Technician Grade III covers the following subjects:

• Mathematics: Number system, BODMAS, decimals, fractions, LCM, HCF, ratio and proportion, percentages, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, elementary statistics, square root, age calculations, calendar and clock, and pipes and cisterns.
• General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, alphabetical and number series, coding and decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, jumbling, venn diagram, data interpretation and sufficiency, conclusions and decision making, similarities and differences, analytical reasoning, classification, directions, and statement-arguments and assumptions.
• General Science: Physics, chemistry and life sciences of 10th standard level.
• General Awareness: Current affairs in science and technology, sports, culture, personalities, economics, politics, and other subjects of importance.

The notification again states that the listed topics are illustrative and not necessarily exhaustive.

Qualifying Marks and Evaluation Rules

The official qualifying marks for both Grade 1 Signal and Grade 3 CBT are the same:

The notification also states that these eligibility percentages may be relaxed by 2 percent for PwBD candidates in case of shortage of PwBD candidates against reserved vacancies. The marks scored in CBT are used for shortlisting to the next recruitment stages.

Preparation Strategy from the Official Pattern

The official pattern makes one thing clear: Grade 1 Signal requires stronger preparation in Basic Science and Engineering and Computers, while Grade 3 requires stronger command over General Science and standard aptitude topics. Candidates should therefore prepare according to the exact post level they applied for instead of using a single common study plan.

For Grade 1 Signal, the largest section is Basic Science and Engineering with 35 questions, followed by Computers and Mathematics. For Grade 3, General Science carries 40 questions and becomes the single most important scoring area. In both exams, the negative marking rule makes random guessing costly, so speed should be balanced with accuracy.
